Maestro

What is it: an email client
Why we love it: This is a beta release, so there might be a few bugs, but it might turn out to be a very nice alternative to the native mail service for Gmail and Outlook users. It’s got limited functionality right now but it certainly looks good and feels smooth; we’ll be watching with interest as it develops.
Who it’s perfect for: mobile email users, WP8.1 only.

Fhotolens

What is it: a photography app
Why we love it: This update brings bug fixes and icon updates rather than huge alterations, but it’s such a good app we thought now was a good time to nudge you about it. Take your photos, store them in Fhotolens’ custom libraries, and edit them with their very zippy and comprehensive tools. We love the timer, the HDR capture option, the abundance of manual and automatic options: there are lots of camera and photography apps in the WP Store, but this really is one of the best.

Flipboard

What is it: a news magazine app
Why we love it: We were all set to shout about this last week, but the developer pulled it; now it’s back, and we still love it! It’s got a lovely interface with plenty of content, and we’re glad it’s finally on WP8.1, a mere nine months (!) since the desktop version launched. Select your favourite categories (fashion, news…) and read news articles from sources like CNN, Elle, the LA Times, and so on. Pin, save and share articles, and collect them into your own custom collage magazine for easy reference. You’ll never be bored again.
Who it’s perfect for: Newshounds with WP8.1 with 1GB RAM only.

Coach’s Eye

What is it: a sports training app
Why we love it: Described as a ‘performance enhancing’ app, this isn’t going to get you kicked out of the Olympics; rather, it’s a video app that lets you analyze your moves in order to improve them. Slow the clips down, let your coach draw on them to explain how you might want to move differently, compare different videos – it’s the future! Sadly, it won’t work on 512MB devices, but the rest of you ought to find it extremely useful.
Who it’s perfect for: athletes and sporty types

WATCH Disney Channel

What is it: a TV app
Why we love it: This is only good if you’re a US customer who’s already a cable or satellite subscriber – but if you fit that demographic, your kids are going to love you forever and ever. This app gives access to a bunch of shows – full episodes, not just clips – as well as letting you watch the Disney Channel live on your phone. Check out the two alternatives too, Junior and XD, each of which has content specific to their particular TV channel.
Who it’s perfect for: Kids in the USA

Two Akwa Ibom Children Accused of Witchcraft | Tortured by Relatives

Two 8-year-old children from Okobo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, lived on the streets for the past month, after their relatives tortured them and sent them out of their homes for alleged witchcraft.

The children have been identified as Mary Odiong and Ekong Asua.

Odiong told Punch that she was blamed for the death of her uncle who died in Okopedi village of an ailment many suspected was AIDS.

Her relatives then blamed her for the death, saying that she was the reason why he had contracted AIDS and died.

“The people in my family called me and started asking me questions whether I was a witch and why I killed my uncle. I told them that I did not know anything about what they were talking about.

They started beating me. They hit me with cutlasses. They cut my buttocks with knives.

After the beating became too much, I lost consciousness. Later, I woke up to find myself in a bush. I have been living on the streets since last month without food and shelter,” she said.

In Esua’s case, his parents died from what has been described as a “strange ailment,” and afterwards, his uncles accused him of being a wizard, and blamed him for his parents’ death.

“My uncles told me that they went somewhere to find out why my parents died. They said they were told that I killed both of them through witchcraft. They tied my hands and started beating me up with native sugarcane and asked me to confess.

When I insisted that I knew nothing about the death of my parents, they took me to a bush, where I met Odiong. Both of us have been living on the streets since then,” he said.

Both children were reportedly rescued from the streets by volunteers from African Children Aid Education and Development Foundation.

They are currently at University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where they are receiving treatment.

(the “Company”) completed its previously announced acquisition of WhatsApp Inc., a Delaware corporation (“WhatsApp”), pursuant to the terms of an Agreement and Plan of Merger and Reorganization (as amended, the “Merger Agreement”) dated as of February 19, 2014, with Rhodium Acquisition Sub II, Inc., a Delaware corporation and wholly owned (in part directly and in part indirectly) subsidiary of the Company (“Acquirer”), Rhodium Merger Sub, Inc., a Delaware corporation, a direct wholly owned subsidiary of Acquirer (“Merger Sub”), WhatsApp, and Fortis Advisors LLC, as the stockholders’ agent.
The acquisition was accomplished by the merger of Merger Sub with and into WhatsApp (the “First Merger”), and
upon consummation of the First Merger, Merger Sub ceased to exist and WhatsApp became a wholly owned subsidiary of Acquirer. The surviving corporation of the First Merger then merged with and into Acquirer, which will continue to exist as a wholly owned (in part directly and in part indirectly) subsidiary of the Company. At the closing, all outstanding shares of WhatsApp capital stock and options to purchase WhatsApp capital stock were cancelled in exchange for an aggregate of 177,760,669 shares of the Company’s Class A common stock and approximately $4.59 billion in cash to existing WhatsApp securityholders. A portion of the aggregate consideration is being held in escrow to secure the indemnification obligations of the WhatsApp securityholders. In addition, the Company
awarded 45,941,775 restricted stock units (“RSUs”) to WhatsApp employees. On the closing date, Jan Koum, WhatsApp’s co-founder and CEO, became a member of the Company’s Board of Directors (the “Board”). The Company has entered into a registration rights agreement (the “Registration Rights Agreement”) with the stockholders of WhatsApp, the terms of which require the Company to file, following the release of the Company’s earnings report for the third quarter of 2014, a Registration Statement on Form S-3 covering the resale of the shares of the Company’s Class A common stock issued to the stockholders of WhatsApp and certain of their transferees. Except with respect to the indemnification rights provided thereunder, the Registration Rights Agreement shall terminate six months following the closing date or such earlier date when all stock registered in accordance with its terms has been sold. A copy of the Registration Rights Agreement will be filed as an exhibit to the Registration Statement on Form S-3 to be filed the Securities and Exchange Commission (the “SEC”). The Company issued the shares of Class A common stock described herein in reliance upon the exemptions from registration afforded by Section 4(a)(2) and Rule 506 promulgated under the Securities Act of 1933, as amended.

Amaechi Speaks Like A Motor Park Tout, Says Rivers PDP

The Rivers State chapter of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has warned the state Governor and chairman of Nigeria Governors Forum, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi, to stop denigrating the office and person of President Goodluck Jonathan or be prepared to face the ‘grave’ consequences of his unguarded utterances.

The party, in a statement issued in Port Harcourt yesterday, described recent comments by Amaechi against the Jonathan-led federal government as childish and unwarranted, adding that the governor’s outburst was shameful.
A statement signed by Jerry Needam, media aide to the state PDP chairman, Bro. Felix Obuh, read in part: “Rivers State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, says unwarranted name-calling, attacks and rabble-rousing comments of Governor Rotimi Amaechi against President Goodluck Jonathan at a recent function is shameful and childish”.
PDP said such outburst showed that Governor Amaechi had demeaned the exalted office of the Governor and exposed himself as one with a loose tongue.
Continuing, it said, “The PDP regrets that Amaechi has been instigating the people of Kalabari Kingdom to take up arms against the federal government and promote hatred against the person of President Goodluck Jonathan who is an Ijaw son over the Soku oil wells and wonders if he believes in peaceful resolution of conflicts.
“Besides the fact that Governor Amaechi’s comments and actions are contraventions of the Electoral Act on campaigns ahead of the 2015 general elections, his comments are also very provocative, confrontational and subversive against the person and office of the President and the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
“We hereby condemn synchronized and methodical attacks on the person and office of President Jonathan, his Wife and first Lady of Nigeria and the PDP. The PDP shall henceforth resist any attempt by Governor Amaechi to continuously slander, insult, and undermine the office and person of President Goodluck Jonathan.
“It is unfortunate that a State Governor will not only be speaking from both sides of his mouth, but also speak like a motor park tout, who lacks mannerism, respect, and culture”.
The statement concluded by warning Amaechi “for the umpteenth time to desist from insulting the President or prepare to face the consequences, which might be very grave”.
